DESCRIPTION:Insulated Next Generation Concrete Masonry – Better & Faster For Less Money \nArchitects\, mechanical engineers\, and some building officials frequently misinterpret one critical sentence that first appeared in the 2003 IECC; thus\, they incorrectly conclude that energy code compliance mandates continuous insulation (“ci”) and fail to grasp the concept of continuous thermal mass. COMCheck is used by most architects in most states to demonstrate energy code compliance for most commercial building designs.  Building designs too often fail to pass COMCheck because architects fail to override the software’s very conservative embedded default values.  Two changes to ASTM C90\, adopted in 2011 and 2014 respectively\, enable concrete block producers to offer “Next Generation” CMU that can be installed faster using less steel rebar while providing for more energy efficient masonry buildings.  This course 1) corrects the critical misinterpretation\, 2) facilitates more easily passing COMCheck\, and 3) introduces design professionals to the benefits of “Next Generation” concrete masonry. \nLearning Units:  1.0 hour H/S/W LU Credit \nPresenter:  Kevin Cavanaugh\, Midwest Representative\, cfiFOAM\, Inc. \nWhile earning his BSME at the University of Maryland\, Kevin interned at the National Institute of Standards & Technology where he first became involved with the concrete masonry industry.  After graduation\, Kevin accepted a position as the National Concrete Masonry Association’s (NCMA) Energy Engineer before launching his 30-year career in technical sales\, marketing\, and product development of lightweight aggregate\, concrete masonry\, and associated products and systems.  Kevin’s industry-wide activities include serving on\, or chairing\, ACI and NCMA technical and marketing committees and serving on the Governor’s Legislative Advisory Council in Wisconsin.  With his wife and three children\, Kevin resides in Mequon\, Wisconsin.

Knisley.  He will discuss laws that are important to and have impact upon public improvement construction projects. \nHe will discuss the following topics: \n\nbanning Project Labor Agreements (PLAs).\nbanning bidder pre-qualifications.\nreduction in the statute of repose.\nProfessional Services exemptions to public bidding requirements.\nState preference law.\nElectronic Bid notices.\nDavis-Bacon requirements under new bill regarding state funding versus federal funding.\nchanges to the way TIF is used.\n\nAbout the Presenter – Kale D. Knisley \nKale is the assistant corporate counsel for the global engineering firm of Stanley Consultants Inc.   In this position\, he is responsible for providing review\, oversight\, and negotiation of client contracts and subcontracts\, and assists in managing litigation and provides broad corporate legal services to the company and its subsidiaries.  Kale is a graduate of Grinnell College of (B.A.) and Drake University (Juris Doctorate).

DESCRIPTION:Program:  High Performance Building Envelopes \nThis session is designed for architects and other design and construction professionals interested in increasing their knowledge of the application and use of air barriers in the building envelopes of commercial and multi-family residential buildings.  Researchers\, architects\, and code writers have shown that attention to specific details in both new and retrofitted envelopes result in better performing buildings with better comfort and long durability as well as lower energy consumption. \nAir leakage through the building envelope is silent\, invisible\, and cunning.  It causes numerous building envelope problems\, including wetting of cavity materials\, spalling of masonry\, premature corrosion of metals\, blistering of paint\, icicles\, and staining of contraction.  Continuity is important but strength is even more important. \nIn buildings\, the air barrier system must be designed\, and specified on plans.  It has specific performance criteria and specific material requirements. \nPresenter:  Steve Tratt\, National Sales Manager\, Canam Building Envelope Specialists \nSteve Tratt has over 26 years of experience in the building envelope air barrier industry\, including expertise in air leakage testing and weatherization materials.  He has worked extensively in the custom design of building science solutions for the education\, healthcare\, commercial\, and government markets.  His material expertise includes two-component polyurethane foam insulating air sealants\, door and window weather‐stripping\, fire-stopping systems\, and air tightness testing equipment.  Steve has trained building envelope retrofit contractors in both Canada and the United States and has made numerous presentations to a wide variety of trade associations.  Currently Steve is involved in organizing and presenting air barrier seminars for architects and engineers.
